Bruges, the capital of West Flanders or Brugge in Flemish is a very romantic city with medieval architecture and atmosphere of the past. An ideal period of time to visit is spring or summer to benefit from to good weather and making boat tours on the canals truly enjoyable.
If you arrive in Bruges by car, you must know that in the historic centre there is limited parking spaces so we recommend to leave your car in the parking at railway station Bruges and walk back in the city in 10 minutes. Initially we tried to park closer but all the parkings closer to centre get full very quickly.
Once we were in Bruges, our exploration started. So here is my recommendation on things to do in Bruges.
1.Drink hot chocolate. We wondered around the streets and we were charmed by the number of chocolateries filled with delicious, yummy chocolate candies.
We stopped at this Atelier du chocolat and had hot chocolate. I had a white one and hubby had a dark one. Having warmed uup and fully satisfied, we wondered back into the picturesque streets. Enjoying the finest Belgian chocolate is a must.
2. Admire the Bruges architecture. We enjoyed the medieval churches (which have free entrance) like Basilica de Saint-Sang and the Church of Notre Dame as well allowing ourselves to get lost just admiring the streets. Make a visit to the Belford Tower, if you are feeling motivated, climb the 366 stairs. The view from the top is splendid.
3. Take a boat tour and visit the canals, during the tour the guides provide information in multiple languages and plenty of anecdotes. We waved at the tourists on the sides and they wave back. Everybody seem to be in a good mood.
4. Enjoy Belgian cuisine for lunch, we stopped at a little place and ordered waterzooi and vol-au-vent. Of course while in Belgium you must order Fries, they are the best. You can also visit the Frietmuseum. There is plenty of choice when it comes to restaurants, so check the reviews for the best ones and take care because some popular choices require a reservation, even at lunch.
5. Have a romantic walk on Minnewater Lake, after a long day in the city you can relax a bit in the nature. Don’t forget to cross the Lovers Bridge. It was a great spot to escape the crowded streets in the centre.
We will definitely come back in Bruges in the summer to enjoy it at the fullest.
Have fun in Bruges.
